This letter was
written when Patton was commanding General of The Seventh
United States
Army. The 7th was the first American formation of Field Army size to
see combat in World War II. It was formed from the U.S. I Armored Corps
to take command of American forces in Operation Husky codename for
the invasion of
Sicily. During the campaign, it was commanded by Lieutenant General
George S. Patton.This was Patton's first major command in the war.
Patton officially took command of the Seventh Army while aboard the USS
Monrovia
(Admiral H. Kent Hewitt's flagship), thus giving 7th Army the motto
of "Born at sea, baptized in blood."
This is a typed letter signed, Headquarters
Seventh Army, December 21, 1943 and
signed G.S. Patton, Jr., Lt. General U.S.Army Commanding. The letter
is on standard sized stationey and is in good condition.The letter
reads: "please accept our most sincere
thanksfor the most perfect arrangements you and your people made for
our
entertainment while we were in Cairo." The letter was written to: Brig.
General Gilbert X. Cheves, Headquarters US Army Forces in Middle East.



General Patton's 7th Army Letter, 1943 ($3,400)
This letter was
written when Patton was posted to Ft. Myer between the wars as
commander
of the 3rd Cavalry. The letter was written at the conclusion of an
exercise with the 3rd Cavalry regiment and the 3rd Corps. The letter
reads:
"This is to simply thank you again for the care and consideration you
and the officers under you showed to the 3rd Cav. Due to your
considreration, a trip we all looked forward to with reluctance became
a
pleasant trip to remember. Further I want to thabnk you also for my
very agreeable morning with you and for a most charming luncheon. With
best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. . . "
Early Patton
autograph material related to the military matters and not to
family correspondence is very scarce and desireable.
The letter is
typed on typical octavo bifold stationery with a Patton
monogram, as a header. It in excellent condition with a beautiful, bold
G S Patton, Jr. signature. There are some punch holes as shown (used to
file the letter) but they do not enter the signature.
